I am the art teacher at Clark Street Elementary in Henderson, NC. This is the first year Clark Street has had an art teacher which has been absolutely wonderful in exposing the students here to the many possibilities in the world of art. Clark Street is a Title 1 school and has nearly 90% of its population on Free and Reduced Lunches. As the art teacher, I am very limited in areas such as a classroom and supplies but make up for it with enthusiasm from other teachers, administration, the students, and my desire to provide the students with a creative outlet. As a rewards system for my art classes, each grade is trying to earn points to earn an art field trip. The younger students in grades K-2 would benefit greatly from a trip to the Playspace Children's Museum in Raleigh because Playspace is dedicated to the education and development of children in areas such as art through hands on experiences. Students will spend the day at the Museum playing and exploring all types of creative art. Some of the activities at Playspace include an art room where children learn about all mediums of art, a puppet theater, a music room, and a stage and dress-up room. Each area is availble for the students to learn with a hands on experience. Many of the Clark Street families may not be able to make even the small payment necessary for admission. Each grade has 25-30 students. The money would be used directly to pay for the cost of the museum trip. The younger students of Clark Street would benefit more from a trip to a Children's Museum that allows children to learn in a hands on experience. The activities there would stimulate the children in areas of creativity, imagination, and education.
