My school is a public school that serves approximately 300 students in transitional kindergarten, elementary school, and middle school. Our population of students bring a rainbow of diversity to our school community in age group, socioeconomic background, cultural beliefs, their unique personalities, strengths, and individual needs.
In recent years our school has put a significant, loving effort into creating a strong special education team to support our students with extra educational, social, and emotional challenges which might otherwise impede their ability to be successful in the school environment.
As a result of our dedication to providing compassionate and individualized services to our students with special needs, we have seen a large influx in our special education population in the last few years. We are so happy and honored that our teamwork has created an educational environment where students with special needs can thrive, but more students means that we need more resources! Your gift will help me to help children, who span an incredible spectrum of intellectual and emotional capabilities, to flourish into confident, mindful, and empathetic individuals.
I am the school counselor at Cinnabar School, where I provide daily social and emotional support to students ages 4-15. In addition to academic learning, school is a place for children to practice and develop social skills and problem-solving strategies that they can use in other relationships and environments for many years to come. During my observations and daily interactions with students, I have found that many of my students struggle to solve problems, communicate, and collaborate with their peers independently. These deficits can be especially distressing during less structured social times, such as lunchtime recess.
I would like to facilitate an Art Club once a week for both the elementary and middle school students, which will foster both creativity and positive social interactions among any student who desires to attend.
I have already planned a curriculum that will span the entire school year. All of the materials that I have requested for this project will allow us to do the activities that I have planned for us this year. We will be using watercolor paper, crayons, and paint brushes to practice and experiment with various watercolor techniques, large scale canvasses to make collaborative group murals with acrylic paint, and Cardstock, markers, crayons, scissors and some other essentials will allow us to make a number of other creations, such as drawing mandalas, making our own stickers, making collages, making mosaics with clay and beads, and more!
Each of the activities that I have chosen will include a teamwork or collaborative component, in which the children will have to work together to share materials, make a group project, or collectively solve a problem. In addition, I will be teaching my students positive social skills by providing in-the-moment feedback and making suggestions for more successful interactions in the future.
