As a school counselor, I provide one-on-one, individualized counseling services to 20-25 students a week. The students that I see in counseling have come to me because they need help with developing appropriate social skills, they frequently feel overwhelmed by their emotions, they have impulsive behaviors that disrupt their learning, they have been diagnosed with a learning or emotional disorder, and/or they have recently experienced a personal loss or trauma. As a result of the varying presenting issues that I see with my students, I make it a priority to create unique treatment plans and interventions that will best support each individual student to reach their counseling goals. In addition to individual counseling, I also create tools, posters, worksheets and games for our school-wide social-emotional curriculum. Through this curriculum, the students learn how to identify and communicate what they are feeling to others, how to independently seek and use appropriate self-soothing and coping strategies in the classroom, and how to resolve problems with peers and adults. Our special education team began giving in-class lessons with this curriculum at the beginning of the last school year, and we are already seeing and hearing students apply the vocabulary, concepts, and tools that they are learning from our social-emotional curriculum. Having an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil will allow me to: 1. Use Apps that help my students to practice applying the social skills that I am teaching them in counseling. 2. Use Apps that will help my students who struggle with organization to practice making lists, schedules, and plans. 3. Show my students videos that demonstrate appropriate social interactions, problem-solving skills, and calming strategies. 4. Easily create custom worksheets, posters, tools and games, both for individual counseling and our school-wide social-emotional curriculum.
