This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
People of all ages enjoy paints, stampers and doodling on "disappearing" ink surfaces and my eight high school students with mental disabilities are no different. Two, in particular, cite art as their favorite pastimes, but we currently have few art related activities to spark their creativity.
I have submitted a request for a generous donor to supply materials for three "free" art activities to use as a part of their leisure time curriculum. None of my students currently possess the skills to independently use a set of alphabet & punctuation stamps, a watercolor center, and/or a gel writing pad and pen. I have also asked for clear storage bins to protect the materials for future use.
As a teacher of students of mental disabilities at the high school level, I focus my instruction on materials that will benefit the students for the rest of their lives. These activities are both age appropriate and fun. And when used at home (whether at a group home or with their families), the activities give the student something to do. My students are unable to read or travel independently, thus they spend a great amount of time in front of the television. Sure, we will probably make a mess with watercolors today, but hopefully the skills will benefit them for years to come!
