My students need cultural resources to experience diversity around the world through art class. They also need a new pencil sharpener that won't have frequent break downs.
The majority of my students come from a low income rural background. Our school offers 100% free lunch. The diversity is low where the large majority is Caucasian.
Most students do not have the opportunity to travel to cities or oceans for vacations.
They look forward to the annual summer fair that kicks off the beginning of the school year. A local lake has a free beach where many students go in the summer to cool off.
My students express interest and excitement when the school offers field trips and assemblies. I notice they become excited for something new and out of the ordinary from their classrooms when they enter the art room.
My Project
My goal is to create lessons and units which promote cultural awareness in the students through art. The materials from these geography books, such as visual maps and facts, will make a difference in students' learning by providing structural information about world cultures.
With my art education background, I will tie in the art that originates in the geographical regions.
Some of the books already provide the art part of the lesson. But I will use other resources such as the internet and my own art history books to assist with the art education. From there, I will create art production lessons that will be inspired by the cultural art.
As for the pencil sharpener, 600 students a week can benefit from a strong commercial grade sharpener.
