Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I want to maximize my student's curiosity. They love science and art, so I want to combine them and have them learn all they can about insects and other creatures. We need nonfiction books on insects and art materials to make it meaningful.
My students are motivated, curious, and hard working.
I teach 22 first graders who are second language learners. They love science and art, so what a better way to get them to learn all they can about the subject of insects. Our school is a title one school located in California with students ranging from preschool to fifth grade. We recently got a project funded that included live insects and my students are going to be observing, recording, and writing all about the adventure. I want them to also have books they can read at their level on the subject. I also want them to create works of art they can write about, design, and share with their peers.
My Project
My students need a Praying Mantis sign to help set the atmosphere of the newest member of the class, a live Mantis. A Praying Mantis Bugifier that will be used to make observations and help the students see the mantis up close. We need nonfiction books that are in sets of six to be used in small groups with the teacher to develop research skills, writing skills, and good reading habits for gathering information. The art canvas will be used to allow students to incorporate their learning into a piece of art that reflect the information they learn along the way. In addition, I am requesting an All Star Seasonal set which includes a butterfly cut out they can use in diagrams, art projects, and writing. The materials I'm requesting will enhance our lessons and engage the students.
Children are curious and love learning about insects.
The materials I've selected will make this experience engaging, hands on, and most of all long lasting. My students are going to be able to use the materials with the live insects from a previous project and I know it will impact the lessons to come. The nonfiction readers are going to give my students information they can use to learn about writing informational pieces.
