Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Our class of 5th-8th graders with high support needs has so much fun learning! We are whole-body learners and we take lots of opportunities to try again when learning new things.

One of our biggest lessons this year has been responsibility for ourselves and our materials!

We have learned how to care for our materials, where to put them when we're done with them, and how to ask for help with materials when we need it. We are also practicing advocacy for our own needs and one request that I have gotten over and over again is for better headphones. The headphones that the school provided break easily, do not cover the whole ear, and as a result they make it hard to focus on what we are listening to, whether it is music or academic. Another request I have gotten is to do more "feelings art", which is a practice of identifying our feelings, drawing a shape or scribble to represent that feeling, and then to paint or color it!

Supporting this project will bring new headphones to the classroom so we can better focus, and increase our art supplies! As the weather warms up here in the beautiful SF Bay Area, we may be able to do some free or guided painting outdoors even!
