I teach advanced English and creative writing to high school students in upstate New York. Like so many communities across the country, our area has endured significant economic and demographic changes over the last couple of decades. Nonetheless, our families and students are resilient, determined, and eager to make the world a better place.
My students are writers and readers who will soon enter the world of college and work.
They want to make their mark in the world and it's my job to prepare them.
Books. Books. Books. Technology is nice, but there's nothing quite like the experience of leafing through and reading a book.
We are requesting copies of "The Killing Joke," "The Arrival" and various true crime mysteries.
Students in my Graphic Novels courses will read "The Arrival" and examine "The Killing Joke." "The Arrival" has no words and will require students to interpret complex imagery by connecting that imagery to past knowledge.
"The Killing Joke" will challenge students to think about the true nature of right and wrong. It will also require students to imagine what they would do if darkness crept into their own worlds.
The true crime puzzle books will come in handy in my detective fiction courses. In between longer weeks, I imagine using the individual puzzles and case studies to practice critical thinking and inductive reasoning.
