Around The World

My students need a world rug so that they can explore the world in a hands on way.

My Students

My students want to travel the world. Help them achieve this goal. Help us create a classroom environment that utilizes all the space for academic enrichment.

My second grade students live in a economically depressed inner city setting.

Most of my students do not get to go outside because the area they live in is too dangerous. My class is a diverse group of students consisting of special education, English Language Learners and regular education students. My students work hard and strive for excellence despite the everyday fears and challenges they face everyday. Our school is located in the inner city. Despite our location we try to give our students every opportunity and resource to learn in a fun and engaging way. Our classrooms are small and wall space is very limited. Due to constant budget cuts in education there is no money to replace old materials or update the classroom with hands on materials.

My Project

As part of the second grade curriculum students are learning about the world continents and traditions. Given the limited wall space it is impossible to hang a world map in my classroom. This rug will allow me to keep a map visible to my students all day everyday. A world map rug will allow my students the opportunity to use a world map in a hands on way as we visit each continent and learn about he customs, animals and people who live there. This will help students visualize where things are and place real items in the continents they belong.

Fun is an important part of learning.

If students are having fun they will learn more and retain learned information better. This project will help my students travel the world without ever leaving the classroom. It will also inspire my students to want to travel the world. This will give my students more of a visual of where places are and where the places are that they have been reading about.
