I am a secondary science teacher in rural Kansas. Just under half of our student body is considered 'at risk.' This is partially due to the low economic status of our community.

In the science department, our goal is to provide authentic, real-life materials for students to understand concepts being taught. At the high-school level, the concepts get increasingly abstract and it is difficult to model these scientific phenomena such as natural selection adequately.

There are many labs to model "natural selection." Most of these labs involve students picking beans, coins, or pictures blindly. Although,tried and true, these models are limited in their application. In some instances, I've also found that they foster misconceptions! The text I've chosen documents natural selection research in the wild.

In the past I have assigned a select few chapters for the students to read. We only have one copy of the book in the classroom, so in the past it has been asked of the students to purchase it themselves, or we've dealt with messy, short-term inter-library loans. Your donation will provide the resources necessary to bring home tough biological concepts. The authentic research provided in these selections will prove invaluable to students.
