I live and work in a growing community in central California. Our school is culturally, economically, and academically diverse. Our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily and a snack of fruits or vegetables at recess. My students enjoy playing games, exploring the outdoors, and dancing to all our silly songs in Kindergarten. I am new to teaching in California and continue to learn more about the culture, climate, and resources available to our classroom. We are an amazing group!
Counting, counting, counting! Kindergarten is the time to learn about number, shapes, counting, and so much more. My school is joining with a local university to use research to guide how we teach our math. In short, we need to count. Counting collection, student tools, and organizers are needed to help students understand the concept of each number and what it represents. This is a new teaching idea for me and I do not have all the tools I need to properly support this teaching strategy. Please partner with me as I grow the resources available to my students!
Do we need to recreate the wheel?
I have included these specific math tools because they support students counting and hands- on learning that creates a deeper number concept that will aid them as they progress in their education. I am asking for dominoes to help students visually see amounts, building blocks and materials to encourage creativity and engineering, playing cards to practice number games, counting bears to encourage sorting and counting, and many more fun counting and building materials students will use as they become familiar and comfortable with counting one to one.
I have also included some reading manipulative to support their learning in this domain as well. I am asking for trays for students to work in, magnetic letters for students to create words, reading cubes to support word family learning, and much, more.
I could purchase these things with my own money, create them from scratch taking hours and hours, or I can simply reach out for support! I do not do this lightly, but with the understanding that children are our future and I would like to give you the opportunity to invest in the 24 students in my room this year, and years to come.
