Aquaponics in the Classroom!

Help me give my students an aquaponics system that will teach them about growing food, waste runoff, nutrient cycles, and organism interactions, all contained in one wire shelving unit!

My Students

We are a Title I school, where every student is entitled to free breakfast and lunch, and many are bused in from underserved and less secure neighborhoods that have been ravaged by COVID-19.

My students are truly representative of Oakland's diverse population, and, despite the sometimes dire circumstances, they have the potential and the determination to succeed, but they still remain at a disadvantage due to our district's allocation of scarce resources.

But you can help! Against all odds, my students are ready to be inspired and are capable of making a positive change, but they need the supplies and resources to do so. Any contribution, big or small, will help.

My Project

Aquaponics is growing fish and plants in a symbiotic relationship. We will have an aquarium with community fish living a normal happy life. Instead of using a traditional filter to clean the tank water, we will pump it above to a tray with plants that will absorb the fish waste and use it for the valuable nutrients within.

This project teaches my biology students about how their food grows, it teaches them about waste products from farming and gives them efficient options for how to deal with the waste, and finally, this project teaches about interactions between living organisms.
