How do I bring the outdoors to the indoors? I teach at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn with majority of my students as ESL from different grade levels. They are very creative and would benefit very much from hands- on projects and experiments. I hope to keep this creativity burning by providing them with something that can inspire them further.
My students are the future environmental innovators.
I started an "aquaponics" project in my classrooms so my students can have a platform for some of their experiments. With very limited budget, the system that I built for my class was a DIY model. The system has been a success with the plants and the fish thriving well.
The students used the system to learn water quality, environmental systems, ecological interactions, and sustainability. To culminate the topic on Sustainability, my students designed their own aquaponics model that can be used for home, school, and small business scale.
The kids are looking forward to building their model to showcase to the whole community. With your help, the students can have their hopes in fruition.
My Project
Aquaponics is a method of farming that utilizes both aquaculture and hydroponics. The wastes from the fish get recycled and used by the plants for their nutritional need. The plants in turn filters the water and brings it back clean for the fish. My students will build their own model of aquaponics that is designed for different venues; an aquaponics for school, an aquaponics for home, and an aquaponics for small business.
The aquaponics project will make my students and other members of the community develop their environmental literacy.
These students are the investments for the future generations. They can be the environmental stewards if provided with a strong seed of inspiration.
