Aquaponics! Explore a Self-Sustaining Ecosystem

My Students

My students are 54 sixth-grade boys and girls who are ready to learn in an exciting environment.

They are full of energy and really thrive on hands-on, interactive lessons in the classroom.

As with many other rural community schools in the state of Illinois, we are in a tremendous economic struggle. There simply isn't enough money in the budget to fulfill the requests of so many of our teachers. My duty as an educator is to do everything within my power to help my students succeed.

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom that has a self-sustaining ecosystem alive and thriving right before your eyes. Picture the excitement on students' faces when they discover the symbiotic relationship between the requested plants, fish and bacteria. Through the science of aquaponics, this encounter is possible. To establish the system, I am requesting an AquaSprouts aquaponics set, education kit, tank, heater, light, sand, accessories, plants, and fish.

As a life science teacher, my greatest joy comes from watching my students learn through unique hands-on experiences.

Providing my students access to an aquaponics system is the perfect way to engage them in sustainable technologies and to introduce alternative ways of growing food! Implementing such a practice in our classroom is sure to pique curiosity and inspire ideas for generations to come.
