Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a physical education teacher, I see approximately 75 students per semester. My students are all from an urban environment, many with rough home lives and limited exposure to educational technology. Recently we have had an influx of ESL students which poses additional challenges. Enhancing their experience in Phys Ed is a constant challenge. It is my goal to help my students become the best and healthiest versions of themselves that they can become.
Incorporating technology will take our program to the next level by allowing students to track and monitor their heart rates, times during trial runs, general workouts, steps, and activities.
Tracking their progress, setting new fitness goals, can help my students achieve more than they ever thought they could. Leading to a healthier more active lifestyle.
Technology is everywhere in education; my students have access to it in every classroom and I'd like to bring it to physical education. As a teacher, it's my job to inspire and educate my students on a variety of things. A new initiative I would like to start and work on with my students would be promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Students will take turns wearing the Apple Watch throughout the semester during a class period. Heart rate, steps, and workouts will all be tracked and calculated during each session. The cool thing about having students try the Apple watch is we can track their heart rate and activity levels during a variety of activities such as in the pool, doing the pacer test, playing in an activity, or walking at a steady pace. The fact that my ESL students would also be able to translate and communicate better with staff and students is an added bonus!
