My students need updated and current AP Language textbooks, for the Advanced Placement test in May.
We currently read from a book called Current and Contemporary Issues, yet the book was published in 2002, meaning all of the "current" issues, have information from before my students were born.
My students are highly intelligent and love to learn.
It is a shame that we do not have access to new textbooks and probably will not have any until 2017. They are all college bound and are the leaders of our campus, where being "smart" is not the cool thing. Yet, on a daily basis, the AP students prove that they do not care what others think and know that knowledge truly is power.
If we have updated text books, students would be able to look at current issues, unlike the issues mentioned in our old book! Most importantly, this book is geared towards high school students and provides activities that will greatly increase their likelihood to pass. Right now, we use a college textbook that does not connect with students and/or have activities that apply to them. Did I mention the books contain statistics older than my students?? My students love small group discussions and we would be able to use our books to springboard our critical thinking skills. The book is great for scaffolding and connects to the AP test greatly. Since most of my students cannot afford AP Language study guides, this book would served as both.
If we have these books, students will really "connect" to the AP test.
It has almost become a running joke about how old our materials are and with new books, students will be competitive on a national level. I know more students would pass the test and be ready for college and the next level of AP literature. It's hard to compete when we have such limited supplies. We would treat these books like gold! We need them!Read More
