My students are bright, inquisitive, and hard working. They take challenging classes and work very hard in order to come to grips with very challenging curriculum. More than half of them will be the first in their families to attend college, at least a fifth will be the first to graduate from high school.
Not having parents who went to college creates significant challenges for my students.
They do not benefit from a familiar context that supports academic achievement. Their parents want them to succeed, but don't themselves have academic skills that they can pass on to their children.
AP Psychology is a wonderful course, full of challenging ideas and concepts. Success on the exam, which students take in the beginning of May, depends on achieving mastery in their knowledge of a large number of key terms. These terms must be firmly committed to memory.
Flash carding is the most effective way for my students to gain mastery over the extensive number of terms they must learn.
Over the years my former students have overwhelmingly told me that learning this skill greatly improved their ability to succeed their college courses. Flash carding may seem old fashioned, but that is because it works!
