Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At my school, all students must take AP English. However, our district will not provide a textbook for AP classes, leaving us to constantly scramble to find readings, let alone books. Moreover, we do not have any non-fiction books and non-fiction is the core of AP English exam.
Our students are creative, critical thinkers who strive for social justice even though many of them have experienced immense inequalities.
Over 60% of our students are learning English as their second language, and many of them are immigrants who must fight to succeed in a society that does not always welcome them. Over 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite these obstacles, our students have been incredibly successful in winning prestigious scholarships and attending renowned universities. They are truly an inspiration.
My Project
"What the Dog Saw" will be the first full-length non-fiction book that my students have ever read. Each of our units is thematically focused on an element of social justice and the articles in this book touch on many of those issues. "What the Dog Saw" illustrates the tenacity and ingenuity that propelled many amazing individuals to success along with a discussion of the social impact of such success. These stories will not only give our students multiple examples of achievement but also ask central questions pushing their thinking around social responsibility and the ideals of social justice. We will read the book closely and have several Socratic Seminars discussing the issues therein. Students will also utilize this information as support for argumentative essays and speeches illustrating their individual viewpoints regarding a gamut of societal issues.
My students often feel dejected given the lack of resources we have in comparison to the wealthier schools in the area and the gap in performance.
We simply do not have the funds to compete with wealthy schools, and our students cannot afford to buy books on their own. This book will not only give them an edge in preparing for the AP exam and college classes, but more importantly it will expand our students' minds, their critical thinking, and their knowledge-base moving forward.
