I teach at Gates County High School, a small, rural public school in northeastern North Carolina. With no major industry in the county, the tax base and available educational monies are extremely limited. In spite of these limitations, our students at GCHS continue to perform well on standardized tests and other measurement instruments of education. I have taught AP Calculus (AB) for two years. In the past, I tried to find old exam questions and solutions to use for practice and reinforcement with my class. Though I found several free-response questions, I could find only one copy of a former multiple-choice section. In the spring of 2005, the new topic of slope fields was added to the test. This, of course, is not on my sample multiple-choice test. Recently I learned of a workbook that I think would prove to be of great value to my students. "AP Calculus (AB) Examination" is a workbook that includes six former AP calculus exams. "The Student's Solutions Manual" (8th Edition) provides a step-by-step solution for each problem (multiple-choice and free-response) in the workbook. In many cases, the incorrect answers also are examined, so that students can learn to avoid common pitfalls. I would like a classroom set of these workbooks (18-20 books) to use with my classes this spring. I plan to continue using these same workbooks for years to come. Last spring the county education system began requiring each student to pay half the cost of the exam itself. For many of our college-bound students, succeeding on the AP exams provides some much-needed financial help to parents who struggle to send their children to college. These workbooks and solution manuals will prove to be valuable assets for these students and families.
