Any Small Goodness

My Students

I am the English Language Development Specialist at my school. All of my students come from low income households with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. We are an authorized public school participating in the International Baccalaureate's Middle Years' Programme. This is the first year that English Language Development is a part of the IB-MYP Programme.

Each of our MYP units ends in some kind of community action where we take our learning and put it into action.

Our first MYP unit our language learners engaged with students from around the world with penpals.com concerning "Race in America". The second unit was titled, "Welcome to my World" where each language learner created a 3 minute video about themselves as a gift to their teachers during this time of Distance Learning.

This last unit is titled, "Any Small Goodness" where students are learning through Tony Johnston's novel about a Mexican boy living in a Los Angeles barrio, how kindness can come in many forms by everyday people - who care.

My Project

In the book, Any Small Goodness, by Tony Johnston, the students are currently going through each chapter and identifying the lesson the main character learns who was the hero of that chapter.

In the end, Arturo and his friends, decide to give back to their own community.

They suffer through many hardships and even a drive by shooting, which you would think would make them grow fearful and pull back, yet they are learn that "any small goodness" makes a difference in the lives of others. They go out and make a difference in the last chapter.

Our English Language Learners will do the same as they finish reading the book in December. They will be given the ability to create a DIY gift basket to give to their own family. I will drop off the items in a paper bag and students will complete the basket. They have a choice between a fruit basket, a snack basket, or a cultural basket.

I will continue to petition our community for the funds to fill these baskets with the items our students will require.
