Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How do students learn 8th grade history when they aren't able to read beyond a 4th grade level? Infusing students' interest in American history while supporting their limited reading levels can actually increase interest in reading.
My students fit in the "Academic Achievement Gap." They live in the inner-city and their parents have incomes that are below the poverty line.
Getting them up to grade-level in history is a challenge! They actually live in the center of a historic location - where riots and social upheaval have been centered in the past. Yet they don't know the entire story of American history, and are unable to understand how they fit into the context of our collective story.
My Project
These resources will help my students understand their place in history. They will be able to view history from the eyes of people that are like them. This will help them with their reading, analysis, and writing skills. These students will be challenged by this supplemental text. It will help them come to understand themselves by learning about the past of people that are like them.
This project, and the supplemental texts it will require, will allow my students to view history from a perspective that is not in the textbook.
It will help them see history from the perspective of people that are just like them, the common people.
