Today is full of technology and tomorrow's world will be even more innovative. How will we create the next generation of animators and mathematicians without having students utilize this new technology? Through stop motion animation students will bring their math and science learning to life.
The students from my school come from one of the most diverse areas in Vermont.
The neighborhood is a refugee re-settlement area for families from Sudan, Nepal, Somalia, and the Balkans. In addition, most of my student live in high-poverty, and do not have access to technology in the home. When my students visit the computer lab they find technology highly motivating and often ask for repeat visits. They can't get enough interactive learning! Our school has undergone a transformation to a model of art based learning. While inspirational for students, much of the funding for technology-based instruction tools has gone away.
My Project
With this grant from Donors Choose, my students will be able to use Xtramath in order to build math fact fluency. Through daily practice, my students will be able to master basic addition and subtraction facts, leaving more time to add depth to concepts. I will be able to monitor their progress and provide extra assistance based on the assessments from Xtramath. The notebook will also give my students access to Dreambox to help accelerate their learning, allowing the students to have a differentiated educational experience. Students will also be introduced to financial literacy through the Planet Orange web learning experience. Using web cameras and stop motion animation, students will be able to create projects that capture important science content they have learned in an interactive way. Using technology to demonstrate and reinforce learning is an amazing way for students to learn -- and inspire them to learn even more!
Access to this netbook will enhance the classroom experience for my students in many ways.
Access to technology is motivating, exciting and engaging. The skills they are learning through this 21st century tool will provide them with a solid foundation in math science, financial literacy and technology. This will put them on the path to college preparedness.
