I teach English Language Arts and Ancient History to a wonderful group of special needs students in grades 6, 7 and 8. In each of my classes, my students have a wide range of disabilities which impede their ability to learn in a General Education setting. My students also come from low-income households which makes it difficult for them to have access to resources that could positively impact their academics.
My students face enormous challenges, yet they are still kind, hardworking and genuinely excited to come to school every day to learn.
I want my students to be prepared for high school, and life beyond high school; therefore, I lovingly craft my lessons from the General Education curriculum so the children are learning the same skills as their peers. We just take a little more time and repetition to learn new concepts. Lessons are also embedded with various supports and scaffolds to best accommodate all of my little learners. In my experience, the support that has been the most helpful, both in making learning engaging and more accessible, is using visuals to clarify difficult language and concepts.
BrainPOP is an exceptional, standards-driven instructional program that engages students through animated movies, learning games, interactive quizzes, primary source activities, and more. BrainPOP's two delightful title characters, Tim and his robot Moby, help explain difficult concepts, design experiments, and show students how to acquire a particular skill in an informative and entertaining way. The videos explain information in a way that is easy for my students to understand and remember, and the quizzes are a quick and easy way for me to check which students are ready to move on to the next concept and which need more time to grasp the material. And as an added bonus, the children just love every aspect of the program, even the quizzes!
Your kindness and generosity will help my exceptional students grasp a myriad of new concepts and skills so that they can continue to grow and learn.
Thank you for helping me give the gift of fun and interactive learning to my students. We couldn't do it without you!
