My students need colorful copy paper, black acrylic paint, puffy paints and other needed print making supplies to create two sets of prints (one positive and one negative) of Andy Warhol’s inspired “Flower Print” art.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My awesome second graders come from a very low socioeconomic background, with the majority falling below the poverty line. They are mainly English language learners (72%) and many of them live in homes which house multiple families under the same roof. The median income is well below poverty level. Some of these seven and eight-year-olds have the sole responsibility of taking care of their younger siblings while their parents are working, with many parents working more than one job. Others are latchkey children.
Our school is Title I and 80% of the children receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch.
In addition to the many challenges that these hard-working students face, they also are coping with the fact that our school is situated in a high crime area with frequent gang activity. My children have extremely limited access to technology in their homes, yet with all these obstacles, my students come to school with much enthusiasm and an eager desire to learn.
My Project
I always admire the great American pop artist, Andy Warhol. I feel that his work is very fascinating and unique. So I decided that I want to introduce his paintings through a series of artist inspired flower printmaking projects. First, I would discuss and show a Power Point presentation of Mr. Warhol life and work. I will also introduce my students to new vocabulary words and then by using the materials; colorful printing paper, printing plates, black acrylic paint, brayer and some artificial plastic flowers, my scholars will work with printmaking tools and complete about two sets of prints (one positive and one negative). These pop art beauties will be displayed during our annual school open house for others to appreciate.
