Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English to juniors and seniors at a small, inner-city high school. While they are incredibly strong, open-minded young people full of hope and determination, many of them struggle with literacy.

Our high school serves a diverse urban inner-city student population (approximately 55% Hispanic; 35% Black; and 10% Asian and White).

Around 80% qualify for free lunch, about 30% receive special education services in integrated and mainstreamed classrooms, and many speak Standard English as a second language or dialect. Most have little access to or knowledge of the digital technologies which colleges and our global society increasingly require. That’s why our English Language Arts department is committed to providing each student with experience with digital literacy by providing classroom netbook computers. Having these computers in the classroom means being able to engage and support student literacy learning and critical thinking skills as part of our curriculum.

My Project

I am requesting 2 Netbook computers to help fill the English department’s computer cart. Eventually, my six colleagues and I plan to have 18 to 30 computers in this cart. As a department, each teacher is seeking donations to this project. Arguably no academic department demands that students spend as much time writing, researching, formatting, and publishing as does ELA; yet currently we have no access to a class set of computers. With Netbooks that belong solely to our ELA classrooms, our students will have greater access to the Google suite of tools (email, documents, calendars).

Teachers will get to provide feedback and editorial comments to the wide variety of writing our students produce, from personal essays for college to original poems and plays; from critical literary analysis to business letters and resumes.

Additionally, as we begin to adopt the new National Common Core Standards, students increasingly will be required to do online research and read a wide array of online nonfiction materials. These 21st-century skills are vital to our students’ future success.
