Our high school serves a diverse urban inner-city student population (approximately 55% Hispanic; 35% Black; and 10% Asian and White). Around 80% qualify for free lunch, about 30% receive special education services in integrated and mainstreamed classrooms, and many speak Standard English as a second language or dialect. Most have little access to or knowledge of the digital technologies which colleges and our global society increasingly require. That’s why our English Language Arts department is committed to providing each student with experience with digital literacy by providing classroom netbook computers. Having these computers in the classroom means being able to engage and support student literacy learning and critical thinking skills as part of our curriculum.
