My Students

My students are eager to participate in art projects, however, they have no materials to use!

I am a 6th grade elementary school teacher in California!

My students consistently look for new opportunities to express themselves, especially through art! Unfortunately, art programs are non-existent in many schools because of the economic crisis. I am working hard to do my part to keep art alive in my classroom. Participating in an Ancient Roman art project will give my students the opportunity to experience an art medium that my students have not had the opportunity to use. This project is the perfect way to wrap up our unit on Ancient Rome.

My Project

My students have recently shown a profound interest in arts education. Much of their newfound ambition is from exploring art mediums that are new to them. I would love to further their arts education and ambitions by teaching them about Roman mosaics. My 6th grade students study Ancient Rome, and I feel that Roman mosaics would be a great way to tie in the social studies standards. Roman mosaics were created in cathedrals and as decorations in homes. The mosaics often depicted daily life in Rome. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of Ancient Rome and learn new art skills by participating in a Roman art technique. To complete this Ancient Rome project, I have requested mosaic art kits and additional mosaic stones.

Art is an important subject that needs to be integrated within our schools because it is a way for our students to not only express themselves but to also communicate their creativity.
