My students need a class trip for 27 Latin students to participate in a guided tour about the influence of Greece and Rome at the Chrysler Museum of Art.
My students need to acquire a deeper understanding of the cultural influences of ancient Greece and Rome. The Chrysler Museum is a fantastic resource that will inspire my students' imaginations and help them deepen and broaden their perspective of ancient Rome.
My students are Latin students in grades 9-12 in a low-income area of Northeastern North Carolina. These students on average do not get the travel, museum, and other cultural experiences that students in more affluent areas enjoy.
Latin helps students prepare for college-level reading and the terminology needed for careers in law, medicine, and a wide range of others. The museum offers resources and connections that tie in with our classroom studies. Examples are: samples of ancient glass from Pompeii and its influence on Tiffany glass, an explanation of ancient cameo-making and its influence on glass, and the influence of mythology on art throughout the ages. There are even Latin inscriptions on ancient tapestries and other artwork that students can try to read. The museum visit will appeal to a wide range of student interests and will motivate them to continue to study and to learn all they can about ancient languages, civilizations, and cultures.
The state of North Carolina has been extremely hard-hit by a budget crisis this year, and the local unemployment rate is at near-record levels. With so many educational needs being unmet, and cutbacks made in many areas, this trip will be impossible without donor support.
We need funding for mileage, an activity bus driver, student admissions to the museum, and students' lunches while away from school, since many of our students are on free or reduced lunches.
With the deep cutbacks throughout the school system due to the state budget crisis, this trip will be impossible without donor support. With your help, all our students will be able to enjoy this unique educational and cultural opportunity. The result will be more well-rounded students who are better prepared for high school and for college. Students' lives will also be enriched by the beautiful, inspiring artwork they will see and by the history and mythology they will learn.
