Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our low income urban classroom of 26 eager 4th and 5th graders has been given the opportunity to visit the traveling exhibit "Tutankhamun." This public school Montessori option allows children to explore deeply into areas of interest. With students who are trained and excited about learning new information, the only thing we lack are the books.

After attending an excellent full day training session for teachers, I realized that we were at a disadvantage. In order to apply most of the pre- and post-museum activities, we needed reference books. Area bookstores helped me put together a list of appropriate books to make this unit of study come alive!

Can you imagine students making their own sarcophagus, building a large pyramid, developing time lines, creating art work based on Egyptian styles, writing in hieroglyphics, making books on the lineage of Kings, sewing costumes? That would be just the beginning, because students let their imagination take them anywhere. All they need is the knowledge base to pursue these projects...BOOKS! It puts the learning in their own hands, and that ownership makes all the difference!

You could help step this learning experience up so that students would carry it with them forever! If they can research and find answers to their own questions, it becomes theirs forever. This is the perfect complement to an in-depth study of an ancient culture. Help us make this dream come true. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
