An Unusual Learning Space for an Unusual Topic

Help me give my students a relaxing learning environment in order to promote wellness for their own mental health as they learn to recognize depression and suicidal ideation in their peers.

My Project

This classroom will be set up to create a "welcome home" feel for students who are learning how to recognize and prevent suicide amongst the student body. The students will also learn about self-care and mindfulness as protective factors in order to prevent vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.

The lap desks will be beneficial in allowing students to sit on meditation pillows, as sitting on the ground reduces anxiety.

Another benefit to sitting low, is the students will be looking up when receiving instruction. Science has proven that sitting with a gaze directed upwards while learning enhances the brain’s ability to process and understand information. With traditional seating, the gaze would need to be near the top of the wall, almost to the ceiling. Sitting lower to the ground allows the angle of the gaze to work in assisting students with learning.

The classroom will be intentionally designed to allow the students to take ownership of the space as they learn, practice interventions, bond as a student-led team, and plan events on and off campus.
