We are a diverse first-grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 22 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
The computer table requested will allow my students to have a safe space to learn through technology in our classroom. We currently have our desktops on a very wobbly table in our classroom. They are narrow, have loose legs and do not provide enough room for 4 students to work comfortably and uninterrupted.
The addition of the desk would allow my students to work at one computer station and focus on the task or activity provided on the desktop.
We are also requesting a parent communication log to keep track of communication throughout the year. This will enable us to clearly see when and how contact was initiated for the benefit of student progress. Lastly, the magnetic easel will be used during small groups in guided reading and math to present scaffolded concepts.
