An Organized Classroom is a Happy Classroom

My students need seat sacks to hold their books, notebooks, and other supplies, organizing racks to store their book bins, and a printer to print articles and diagrams to help them with their research.

My Students

I teach math and science to two classes of 5th-grade students. My students come to school with a strong desire to learn and do their best. They love their school and are grateful for all the opportunities they are given here. My students are diverse, both in cultural backgrounds and in life experiences. My school is located in Lincoln Park, however, my students come from all over the city to attend the school. Some of my students take public transportation for over an hour just to get to school. My school is such a special place because it unites students from across the city of Chicago. What all families at this school have in common is a value in the importance of education and the drive to help their children succeed in their lives and academic careers.

My Project

My 5th-grade students transition back and forth between two classrooms. They carry their independent reading books, notebooks, and other supplies in book bins when they transition. In class, they set their book bins on the floor. They often get knocked over and it makes it difficult to maneuver around the classroom with their belongings everywhere. Book bin racks would solve this problem because students would have a place to store their book bins, leaving the classroom floor clear for moving around.

My students attend a school in the Chicago Public School district.

Our classroom is a tight squeeze for thirty students. We have tables (instead of desks), so my students don't have anywhere to store their notebooks, independent reading books, workbooks, and other supplies. Seat sacks, cloth sacks that fit over the backs of chairs, would allow my students to store their supplies where they would have easy access to them. Right now, students are storing their materials on top of their tables, underneath their chairs, and in bins next to their seats. When students move around the classroom, they are often knocking over each other's supplies and it makes it difficult to get around, not to mention, that it looks messy. With seat sacks, the classroom floor and tops of tables would remain clear, students' belongings would be safe and within reach, and students would be able to focus on learning, rather than management of their materials.
