I am a teacher of 26 wonderful first graders in Marrero, Louisiana. We are a school outside of New Orleans and have many children who were deeply affected by Hurricane Katrina. I am requesting an LCD projector for my classroom. I have found that my teaching has had to get more and more creative in order to capture the attention of my media savvy students. I have also noticed that the students really respond to visual images and creative presentations. I would love to be able to create PowerPoint presentations through which I can present lessons in fun and creative ways that will be more meaningful for my students. For example, we recently completed a unit on a butterfly's life cycle. Instead of standing at the board and drawing out each stage and losing the attention of students, I can put together a presentation with actual clips of a butterfly in a chrysalis and other graphics that will capture and hold their attention. There are also many amazing software programs to which I would love to expose my students; but, with only one computer, it is virtually impossible for all of the students to benefit. With a projector, they can all experience and learn from these programs at one time. The students will also have the opportunity to create their own PowerPoint presentations to show to the class. The students can also use additional software, such as Kidspirations, which allows students to create their own word webs and present them to the class. This resource will create limitless access to internet websites for my students. When we were studying the rainforest, I had all 26 of them huddle around the computer to see pictures of the Amazon rainforest. They were fascinated by the pictures; but, as you can imagine, it was not an optimal viewing set-up. This gift will do so much for my students for years to come.
