Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In South Sioux City, NE. we are proud of our diverse community. My classroom is a reflection of that. I take great pride of teaching students my students, many of whom are either immigrants or refuges or sons and daughters of immigrants and refuges. My classroom is co-taught by myself and an ESL teacher during writing because I was selected to work with more ESL students at our grade level. My students are special because they co-exist, work together, and love one another in a way that all of us could draw an example from. In addition, a fair amount of my students do unfortunately deal with abuse, neglect, or trauma of different kinds in their home lives. I have seen first hand how strong and resilient these students are. I have seen students carrying a lot on their hearts who will rise to the occasion. Before I teach I strive to establish to my kids the are both safe, and loved in my classroom. I want all of them to come exactly as they are. I try my best to give everything I have for these kids each and every day.
My Project
We will use our iPad for inquiry in math and science. I strive to create a research based classroom in both subjects where students must find their own process to a conclusion. Often times they work together in doing so as a duo or groups. I work hard to act as a facilitator in a constructivist atmosphere in our classroom. An iPad would empower students to seek answers to questions they are wondering about during specific projects.
I have many students still learning the English language in my classroom.
An iPad would go a long way in helping to build background knowledge on topics that we are studying. Often, due to language barriers and cultural differences it is important to really build up background knowledge as a precursor to a lesson for my students. An iPad would aid in that for students in need of reference.
Our iPad would also be part of a faux flipped classroom where Id record lessons for my students to refer to. I would use our iPad for students to refer to lessons I would record for projects we would be working on. Students would then be able to use the iPad to refer to lessons as often as they would need to.
