Imagine the frustration my students experience attending school for the first time when they realize their teacher does speak the same language as them. What better tool than an iPad to help break that language barrier for both the students and the teacher!
My twenty-four kindergarten students come to school each day eager to learn.
More than fifty percent of my class are English Language Learners, meaning English is their second language. Some of the English Language Learners have parents that do not speak English either. These students are expected to be at the same reading level as their English Proficient peers. Not only must they learn the English language and vocabulary, they must also learn letter sounds and how to decode. These students do not have the resources at home to support their learning, especially since our area was hit by Hurricane Sandy.
I am requesting donations for an iPad. I will be downloading various apps where students can practice letter writing, learn letter names and sounds, and even try putting sounds together to read words. Our most difficult challenge is vocabulary. There are apps out there that will help us to bridge the gap between the vocabulary of two languages. My students will be able to participate in interactive stories read out loud while I work with other students. Math skills will be strengthened when students are able to learn about numbers, shapes, and counting by participating in math games.
Donations towards this request will help students learn the foundations of reading, writing, and math in a fun, exciting and interactive way!
This piece of technology is the exact teaching tool needed to get my students interested in learning.
