I teach several classes of middle school English Learners (EL). My students come from various backgrounds, including academic abilities, cultures, home languages, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Something that they have in common, however, are that they are eager to learn and are curious about the world.
My students are hard workers.
They strive to do their best and achieve. The students want to make themselves and their parents proud. Unfortunately, they have many hardships to work through on a daily basis. Despite this, they are motivated, caring, and funny!
This coming school year, my EL class will be experiencing a big change! We will be using an ELA workshop model, and implementing a new curriculum. I will be able to devote more time to small groups and individual students while working on literacy skills. Students will be able to use the IPad for activity and game apps that will reinforce the skills they are learning. They can access e-books and textbooks in English or their home language. We can use this IPad together to keep track of their reading and writing data, reading levels and goals. Students can use the IPad to create classroom presentations by taking photos and videos. We can use it to aid with their vocabulary acquisition. There are so many possibilities!
