This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a charter school that caters to the arts. My students are from all walks of life. You could say that I deal with a diverse population of children. My students attend to various forms of the arts: dance, visual, music, theater, and creative writing. Given that my students are in the arts, they have their own sense of creativity; they have the ability to think outside the box. My students think critically and for the most part, always blow me away with how their minds work.

My Project

Imagine yourself teaching more than 150 students… Now imagine being their English teacher. All teachers face their own challenges, but as an English teacher, I face having to help my students build their reading levels and their abilities to write.

Being able to help my students build their reading levels is always a reward in and of itself.

By having the resources that will help that experience makes it even more worth while. Having computers means giving students the tools to better themselves with apps and more options for reading than your standard classroom library. My students can practice their reading by logging into websites such as commonlit.org or readtheory.org and really practice their reading fluency and comprehension. I can do all of this in the classroom where it matters the most because I am there to support them as they run into obstacles.

Writing plays a major role in the English classroom. By enhancing the amount of technology I have in my class, I will be one step closer to making my class a 1:1 classroom. Everyone remembers the days when they would write an essay and hope to meet with the teacher one-on-one in a period to receive that feedback. With having more computers I am able to make that happen in the classroom. I would be able to log into a student's document as we would share and give instant feedback without having to interrupt the flow of writing. This in turn would give me more of an opportunity to provide the feedback that students need.
