My Students

My English Language Learners face many obstacles to finding good books, but when they get books in their hands, they are enthusiastic readers. Our school serves 80 English Language Learners. The vast majority are economically disadvantaged and have few books at home. My students come from homes where hard work is valued, but families may be unable to simply read with their children. They rely on my school to provide good reading role models. I consider it my first priority to help students develop lifelong love of reading for success in school and beyond.

My Project

Love of reading starts with rich classroom libraries. My classroom library is the center of my curriculum as I use reader's workshop and Sheltered Popular Literature. My students self-select, read, and discuss in literary circles and reader's conferences to reflect on text. Books will be available for checkout for students to take home, as many of my language minority students do not have access to books in English at home.

This collection is inspired by my students' interests.

Sports, mystery, teen drama, fantasy: there is something for all my diverse students to read and love. This collection of books includes comics and high-interest/low-reading level books to lure new readers into a reading habit.

The goal of this project: every child -even the most reluctant reader- will get exposure to engaging books, good reading role models, and discussion of literature as a lens to learn more about the world around them. Pleasure reading is also a well-researched means of developing English language and literacy my students need to survive and thrive in US schools.
