Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Usually African American students make up 70% of my class; the rest includes a rich diversity of cultures such as Latino and Asian. Since we are a Social Justice Magnet School we are teaching respect, tolerance, appreciation, and teamwork. Our students are aware of the issues awaiting them and they are getting ready! Unfortunately, my school is a title I LAUSD with minimum funding and most of our parents can't afford donations.

All over the world, educators realized that students enjoy studying and increase their scores when they are truly engaged in their learning. This doesn't happen when young children are mandated to sit at their desk for hours, all of them filling up the same worksheets given by their teacher. This kind of traditional teaching has to changed.

Research shows that successful learning occurs when educators design their lessons according to students' interest and offer them opportunities to use their own studying style. Along with a clear discipline, this includes freedom of choice and comfortable workplaces. The carpet and the vinyl cushions will allow students to leave their desk and work on the floor wherever they please. I experimented this new procedure last year, and even though some kids just sit on their jackets, everyone was studying! I never thought that offering freedom of content, form, and space would motivate even the most troublesome students! This carpet and the cushions seem now parts of an essential teaching supply list.

You will be offering many classes to come an engaging learning environment where all kids can find their spot to study the way they want.
