Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Ours is a small school located in an urban "campus" building that also houses 5 other mini-schools. We share the facilities but not the budgets. I teach ESL to all levels/grades and also teach a Drama Elective. We are typical in the problems we face, but not typical in how we choose to address them. My students hail from many different countries in Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Africa. They are eager to learn and participate but often don't have the opportunities to do so.

Budget cuts have hit our city hard. Teacher's choice money faced an over hundred dollar cut. Money has dried up for trips, Saturday Academy, after school extra curricular activities as well as evening classes. We are attempting to teach the children how to fundraise and help themselves. Senior year activities, class trips and other events can still occur but necessitate some effort on their part.

My students need canvas panels, paint and mini canvas boards and easels. These supplies will be used to create art for fundraisers. We will be having a homecoming event, Parent appreciation dinners and a silent auction to benefit student activities and clubs. Not only will the students be excited about creating works of art, their efforts will allow them to enjoy the activities, clubs, and trips they fundraised for.

Your donation will give us the EMPTY CANVAS upon which to create our works of art. Your donation will be only one part of a big push and effort to be self-sufficient and help ourselves. Your donation will help teach students how to use their creative energies in a positive way.
