Every year my South Bronx first graders and I celebrate Earth Day by learning about the Earth before Earth Week. We learn about the importance of clean water and clean air. We plant seeds and visit the local community garden. Last year we went to Riverside Park on the West Side of Manhattan and raked leaves.
This year I am thinking a little bit larger; in honor of Earth Week, I want my students to be involved in planting projects inside the classroom before Earth Day. Finally, on Earth Day, as a way to beautify the neighborhood (and teach students about plants and community at the same time), my students and I will spend the afternoon of Earth Day in the local community garden planting our seedlings from the classroom outdoors in the garden beds.
In order to do this I will need various indoor and outdoor plant kits. I am hoping to keep some plants inside the classroom after Earth Day so that students can monitor some plant progress.
I want my students to have this experience not just to support our science units on life cycles and plants but also to teach them to care for and respect the planet.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
