My Students
6th grade is an exciting year full of academic, social, and emotional maturing. I have the opportunity to create a classroom that fosters independence and to also leave a lasting impression before they move into Junior High.
My 6th graders have a wide spectrum of needs.
Between my gifted and English language learners, the challenges are many. It is my goal to make sure my kids leave with a love of learning and seek it in their own daily lives.
My Project
As I have looked back on my students scores, there is one standard that, across the board, they all struggle with and that is non-fiction reading comprehension. As I look at my instruction, I do really well with teaching fiction literature because I have more of it on hand and it is engaging, however, most of what they will read in their lives is non-fiction text. I want to up my game by providing them with an article a day so we can really sharpen our non-fiction reading skills. Scholastic magazines provide current, interesting, and challenging articles along with comprehension questions and extensions for teachers. This is exactly the tool I need to enhance learning in my classroom!
