My beginning and second-year band students are enthusiastically learning to play woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. These 4th and 5th-grade students are eager to perform songs for their peers and their family.
"I want to play "Lightly Row" for you!" is announced with pride at the beginning of the lesson.
In our district, students can rent or buy instruments from local music stores. Each school has a few instruments to loan to students whose family cannot afford to rent from the store. Bristol, CT is dedicated to helping interested students learn to play an instrument.
My Project
My elementary band students are learning how to play an instrument, to read music notation, to perform alone and with others, and to create music. There are so many challenges facing these young musicians all at once, such as using the proper position, air support, tonguing, fingerings, note and rhythm reading, matching pitch, etc. By having an Apple iPad in lessons, students could use some apps to learn to read music notation, specifically note and rhythm reading. Additional apps can also help with fingerings, matching pitch, and air support. I could also record individual or group performances so the student(s) could hear it back and evaluate the progress. There's even an iDoceo app for the teacher that can assist the many daily classroom tasks such as data collection and assessment, video, audio, and photos of student work, and much more.
The Apple iPad will play many roles in the program for the students and the teacher.
Technology is part of every student's life and using it in learning to play an instrument will enhance the experience. Students can have fun learning to read music notation, match pitch, increase air support, learn fingerings, etc. with games that apps provide. Also, making music is an aural experience, so they should have the opportunity to hear and evaluate any performance. In a technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their music literacy as well as their desire to learn to play a band instrument!
