My students LOVE this. Every day, I have students (of all ages) asking to take bags home to read to younger siblings. Initially when I started this, I assumed it would be for my older students. However, I have had first graders telling me that they can read these books and they have a younger brother or sister that they want to read to and asking if they can please take them home. I've also had students that are drawn to these types of books either because they match their reading level or because they feel they are more durable than regular books. I've labelled the books as property of our school and I keep track of who has them and this has been such a huge success. When I see students that are usually reluctant readers taking these bags, my librarian heart is happy. The students have been reading in small groups and having rich discussions about the texts they are reading. I have created question prompts to help promote deeper discussions. The students then write a book recommendation for their peers. Based on the recommendations students then choose the next book they want to read. \r\n Students read with their peers. They work around the room. They sit knee to knee to promote partner reading and discussion. A focus in our third grade has been Read Discuss Write. Our philosophy is the stronger a child's oral response to a question the stronger their written response will be. It is vital the students have the opportunity to read and talk about books in order to strengthen their comprehension. \r\n The students get excited to see what they will read next.
