In a middle school classroom, there is no such thing as a typical day, but in life there are typical skills everyone should have. I believe using advanced computers are apart of those skills and every student should have equal access to the resources they need in order to be successful.
I teach Sixth Grade Science in a high-need community with large Special Education and English Language Learner populations.
In our school, more than fifty percent of our population receives free or reduced lunch. My students are hardworking and want to be as successful as possible. They get very excited when I share technology with them and they enjoy learning how to use different programs and applications.
My Project
I have worked very hard to get iPads funded through DonorsChoose.org and my class and I love using them, but there is still quite a bit that we cannot do because many of the apps and projects can only be accessed or created on an Apple computer.
One example of how we will use the MacBook is as follows: Prior to an experiment, I will create an activity on the MacBook which will be downloaded to students iPads. Then during the course of the experiment, my students will use their iPads to type the descriptions of the phases of the experiment as it progresses, take still photographs and movies to document the progress. As they work, the work will be upload to the platform I have set up on the MacBook and as a class we can share data, discuss results and get real time feedback on the experiment.
The MacBook Pro will allow my students to access technology in a unique way, it will allow me to have a greater access to my students and allow us to work more collaboratively as a class.
Not having a access to technology seems unfathomable to so many Americans.
Sadly, this is the reality for many of my students. The donation of the MacBook Pro will improve our classroom experience with the iPads. I will be able to create better assignments for my students and I will be able to look at student assignments from the MacBook. Giving them access to this technology is truly opening their minds to endless possibilities in their future.
