As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, smart and very busy.
They like to move, they love to hear stories, read and love lots of attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and all receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."
From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth. I may not be able to control their home lives. However, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our littlest learners to continue on a path of academic success.
My Project
Recently, I have begun helping my children learn to code. A MacBook Pro would give my students additional opportunities to use technology to strengthen their learning. Given my students’ backgrounds, many will not be able to receive these types of opportunities unless I can provide them.
They need to develop strong literacy and math skills as well as become fluent users of technology.
Giving my kinders access to a MacBook Pro and other resources will help them grow and learn these necessary skills. As they gain literacy and math skills, they will also gain technology skills that will benefit them both in school and in daily life beyond school.
Through the use of a MacBook Pro, my kinders will practice reading and math through websites such as MobyMax and Epic to name a few. Quality technology like this MacBook Pro would be a tremendous tool to help my kinders succeed!
