An Altered Perspective - Dystopia

Help me give my students the opportunity to get lost in the wonderful world of literature. I would love for my students to have access to the dystopian novel, Parched, written by Melanie Crowder.

My Students

At TMS, the motto is to "ensure learning for all." My classroom consists of 125 amazing 8th grade students from all walks of life who are committed to one common goal, exponential growth and success in language arts. Being apart of this learning community, means always working together to reach the highest level of academic achievement. My students continually make an effort to improve in one of the most challenging but critical areas of schooling, reading and writing. The work we do in the classroom, together, will ultimately nurture the endless opportunities that the world has to offer them.

My Project

I have selected the dystopian novel, Parched by Melanie Crowder, to teach alongside the 2nd writing unit, Literary Essays, for my 8th grade students. As we read the novel, the focus will be to look at the different craft moves the author uses to help develop the story.

I specifically picked this book because of its unique presentation of perspective shifts throughout the chapters in the novel and the courageousness the characters possessed as they sought for survival.

Through this combined reading and writing unit, my students will be exposed to literary analysis and equipped with the skills needed to navigate through any type of text given to them.
