Amplifying the Voices of People of Color Through Our Library

Help me give my students access to novels that are written by people of color in order to develop a love for reading while making authentic connections and learning about other cultures

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When attempting to explain the love I have for my students in words, I recall one particular lesson during the 2019-2020 school year. My students were sitting around in a circle ready to analyze song lyrics in order to determine the theme. Their voices and laughter filled the room until I managed to gain their attention.

After listening to the song, my students and I were able to have an open discussion about race, immigration, and how one's life experiences impact personal opinions.

This conversation was extremely powerful, and I learned from my students' comments and opinions. Our classroom reflects our school community, which is ethnically diverse and 66% low-income. They may be children, but they are intelligent human beings with valuable background experiences that we can all learn from, including me.

It is nearly impossible to describe what I admire about my students in words, but it is undeniable that they are a group of people that deserve as much as I can provide for them. They are determined. They are intelligent. They deserve more.

My Project

Last year my students were able to engage in productive conversations about race and immigration when we read books like "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang, and "Refugee" by Alan Gratz. These texts provided students with a reading experience that was not only entertaining but also thought-provoking. Students were truly engaged, which allowed me to provide appropriate support for reading comprehension, while we also taught one another about larger life lessons.

By providing these novels I will not only have more materials to support reading comprehension, but I also will be able to address social-emotional learning.

Additionally, by providing novels across a variety of genres, I am hoping to reach as many readers in my classroom as possible. It is important for students to see that characters of color do not always need to be saving the world-- people of color can be riding dragons or dealing with middle school. I am hoping that this representation will help encourage a love of literature in the classroom.

The novels from this project were selected not only based on their characters and themes, but also the authors. I ensured that the authors were people of color. I want to provide my students with authentic novels that properly portray the culture that is being discussed. I hope that this also encourages them to continue to pursue their unique talents and interests.
