I service 35 students within a school in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While all of my students from prekindergarten to fifth grade have a speech and language impairment, they have a vast range of needs.
Language is the medium of the schools and children who have a speech and language disorder have more difficultly accessing the curriculum than their peers.
This year, I will be working both remotely and in-person while wearing a mask. This is such a critical time to provide them with support as children have not been in the school building since March. Many of them have had a regression in their skills since and it is my job to ensure that they receive the best level on instruction possible given the new circumstances.
My Project
FM systems (such as the voice amplifier for in person therapy) have long been used with children with hearing loss but there is significant research which states that "Sound-field systems help all children, even those with normal hearing. They also help children who are learning English as a second language" -ASHA. These systems also help children hear the therapist's voice despite distance, backgrounds noise, or other sound dampeners such as masks allowing the student to hear the full audio clearly and remove several barriers. The headphones will amplify my students voice by bringing their sound directly to my ears, cutting out all background noise while the built in microphone allow the children to hear my voice at the best quality.
My early education students are at a critical language learning period where foundational skills are being fostered the sound from their therapy both in person and online must be of the best quality.
Finally, the shredder will provide their protect their identities to the fullest extent since blending learning comes with increase of paperwork which will have information protected by FERPA.
