Help me give my students career-related toys to enhance their counseling office experience this year. Students from every classroom come to borrow kinetic sand and play-doh on rainy days and they love to shoot hoops!

My Project

This is my fifth year as Newlin’s school counselor! I have learned that if you want students to open up to you, play therapy is the best. Our students have many demands on them, and sometimes they just need a break. They make plans to come shoot hoops in my office. The new basketball goal will help them keep score without getting into arguments. After a quick game, they can return to class refreshed and ready to learn.

The beginning of the school year is a time of lots of feelings.

Our students need to feel comfortable expressing themselves to me — especially new students. We will have 100 students coming from different schools in addition to our new crop of kindergarteners. There are likely to be lots of feelings hashed out over play-doh, kinetic sand, and Legos in my office. I was also very happy to find some play-doh toys that lend themselves well to teaching career readiness!
